Halcyon Optical Services was established in December 1999 to provide technical expertise to the optical fibre industry. Our chief consultant, Andrew G Hallam PhD CPhys, has  been actively involved in optical fibre and integrated optics technology for over 30 years and has extensive experience in fibre measurements, optical design, calibration and instrument design.

As former head of the Measurement Standards Department at GN Nettest (formerly PK Technology) he was responsible for setting up and running a calibration laboratory to ISO 9000 standards. His work included the development of a suite of calibration standards, working closely with NPL in the UK and NIST in the US, to achieve traceability for a wide range of optical fibre test equipment.

Andrew has been an active member of the TIA and IEC standards organisations for many years and has authored several international standards. These include optical fibre geometry measurement, coating geometry characterisation, fibre length measurement and mode power distribution measurement.

With a particular interest in optical design, he has held patents for a high numerical aperture toroidal lens, used in fibre index profiling, a dark-field illumination system for coating geometry measurement, and a mode control device for controlling the mode distribution in multimode optical fibres.

Recent projects include a long-wavelength pyrometer for gas turbines, non-contact position sensors, a Bragg grating-based load measurement system for aircraft, and various microscope systems for fibre characterisation.

Andrew is now the chief consultant of Halcyon Optical Services and is able to offer technical advice and design expertise to optical fibre and related industries. Halcyon Optical Services is based in the south of England near to the historic city of Southampton.
