Requirement:  Accurate positioning of an optical fibre

To measure mode-field diameter of a singlemode optical fibre, it is important to accurately position the end of the fibre on the axis of rotation of a scanning detector. The challenge was to produce a high quality image of the fibre so that the end and also the sides of the fibre were both in focus. Achieving this required making a careful balance between optical resolution and depth of field. The photograph, shown right, achieves this balance, enabling the end of the fibre to be accurately positioned inside the green target box.

This design is now an intergal part of the MA400 mode-field diameter measurement system from PE.fiberoptics Ltd.
